Better: "A 28-year-old woman with hypertension discovers she is pregnant. Her current medication, lisinopril, must be stopped because ACE inhibitors cause {{c1::fetal renal damage and oligohydramnios}} in the second and third trimesters"

Rule 7: Provide Context

Cards without context are brittle. A fact remembered in isolation often can't be retrieved in a different context.

Bad: "Wernicke's area is in the {{c1::superior temporal gyrus}}"
Good: "Wernicke's area, responsible for {{c1::language comprehension}}, is located in the {{c2::superior temporal gyrus}} of the dominant hemisphere. Damage causes {{c3::receptive (Wernicke's) aphasia}}"

Rule 8: Redundancy is Okay

If an important concept can be asked from multiple angles, make multiple cards.

For the brachial plexus:

  • "The median nerve originates from roots {{c1::C6, C7, C8, T1}}"
  • "Damage to the median nerve at the wrist causes loss of sensation in {{c1::the lateral 3.5 fingers}}"

Each card tests different, retrievable information about the same concept.

Card Formats and When to Use Each

Basic (Question → Answer)

Best for: Clinical correlations, "what is the treatment for X," discrete facts with no natural sentence context.

Cloze Deletion
