Flashcards vs. Notes: Which Study Method Actually Works for Medical School?

Should you take detailed notes or use flashcards? The research is clear — but the best students use both strategically. Here's how to combine them for maximum retention.

Every medical student has the same debate with themselves at some point: should I take detailed notes or just make flashcards?

The honest answer is that the question itself is wrong. Notes and flashcards serve completely different purposes. Understanding what each does — and what each cannot do — is the foundation of an efficient study system.

Note-taking is a processing activity. When you write notes from a lecture or textbook, you're forcing your brain to:
